KARIN HELLMAN

Animation, graphic assistant

Graphic assistant and animator for the visual identity for EMMA - Espoo Museum of Modern Art - Karin Hellman Exhibition 2025-26

Creative & Graphic Design: Päivi Helander

Karin Hellman exhibition

Karin Hellman (1915–2004) was a Finnish modernist artist who primarily employed the collage technique in her work. She uses everyday materials, including recycled textiles and other found objects, to create her artwork and her creative process is characterized as intuitive and bold.

In the visual identity for the exhibition, we try to highlight the layering process of collage, Hellman's use of organic shapes and lines, and the contrast between subtle and strong colours. It's fascinating how her artwork is static but presents a sense of movement and rhythm.

Marketing Communications

Marketing for the exhibition includes a variety of animated advertisements that are displayed across the city, in transportation and at bus stops.

The animations feature an opening scene of shapes spiraling and converging, and move on into a brief showcase of Hellman's iconic works. The shapes in the animations are extracted from her artworks.

Visual Elements

KARIN H

We love the simple and bold signature that Hellman includes in her work - KARIN H - with threads, paint, or any medium she used in the artwork. Therefore the logotype of the exhibition is inspired and designed with reference to her signature that perfectly captures the naturalness and down-to-earth style of Hellman and her sense of firmness that is created by such soft materials.

SPIRAL

The spiral is a recurring motif in Hellman's work, symbolizing the cycle of life and also spiritual growth. Similar to the spiral, many of the shapes she uses are cyclic in nature - circles, arcs, wheels, buttons, or even the human eye.
